The BIOJET project focuses on Black Drop Biomedical’s specialized contribution to enhancing 3D bioprinted implants through the development of inkjet-compatible bioink formulations for chondrogenic applications. As a leading bioink supplier and bioprinting technology developer, Black Drop will create optimized hydrogel formulations specifically designed for integration with PROFACTOR’s advanced inkjet system within Pilot Line 1 of the inkjet-bioAM consortium. Our project addresses the critical materials gap by developing bioactive, inkjet-printable formulations that enable precise deposition of chondrogenic factors on bioprinted scaffolds, supporting the pilot line’s objective of creating patient-specific knee implants with enhanced biological functionality.

Validation of cell-free chondrogenic regenerative implants developed in Pilot line 1-Inkjet printing for functionalisation of 3D implants is currently limited by a lack of reliable in-vitro quality control (QC) tools. Although bioreactors can simulate in vivo conditions and reduce the need for costly and ethically sensitive animal and human studies, they lack proper monitoring systems. Current QC of maturation bioreactors relies on invasive and destructive techniques such as live/dead assays or histology, which disrupt culture conditions and increase variability. There is an urgent unmet need for non-invasive, real-time biomarker monitoring in bioreactors to accelerate validation and reduce reliance on animal testing. 

Bioherent addresses this gap with BioXPLORER-QC. In this project, Bioherent uses its proprietary BioXPLORER platform, a label-free, integrated silicon photonic biosensor capable of multiplex, real-time detection of biomarkers in complex media. By adapting BioXPLORER with a perfusion module, BioXPLORER-QC will deliver the first demonstrator for semi-continuous monitoring of interleukin-6 (IL-6) during the in-vitro maturation of regenerative implants. This will provide dynamic QC data without disturbing culture conditions, acting as the missing link in the PL1 value chain by complementing implant production with predictive bioreactor monitoring. 

BioXPLORER-QC workplan spans 9 months and progresses from TRL5 to TRL6. 

• Activity 1 (M1–M3): Co-development plan and prototype adaptation with perfusion module. 
• Activity 2 (M1–M7): Validation of the prototype and cartridges using spiked and bioreactor-derived samples, assessing limit of detection, dynamic range, and variability against ELISA benchmarks. 
• Activity 3 (M6–M9): Proof-of-concept demonstration of IL-6 monitoring in a maturation bioreactor, with protocols consolidated for transfer to PL1 partners. 

The project will have a significant impact: accelerating implant validation, reducing animal testing, and providing reproducible, non-invasive QC for bioreactors. It will strengthen the industrial value chain of PL1, improve sustainability through reduced animal testing, and position Bioherent as an enabler of GMP-ready regenerative workflows. The market potential is high: the regenerative implant market is expected to maintain its current rise, with strong demand for predictive QC technologies. Beyond cartilage implants, the platform can expand to cell therapy and biologics manufacturing, ensuring long-term industrial and socio-economic benefits.

BIOSTRUCT aims to advance the surface patterning of biomedical implants using Resorbink’s amino acid phosphoramide (APA) technology. The project will focus on formulating novel biodegradable and biocompatible photo-resins tailored for high-resolution surface structuring. Employing nanoimprint lithography (NIL), biodegradable micro- and nanostructured surfaces will be fabricated, designed to enhance biocompatibility, promote tissue integration, and reduce infection risks and lowering the probability of implant failure. Unlike conventional NIL materials, APA-based formulations offer intrinsic biocompatibility and biodegradability, making them ideally suited for regenerative medical applications.
During the project we will develop biodegradable, biomimetic NIL compatible resins and demonstrate the applicability of NIL to planar, porous, and anatomically curved implant surfaces, with subperiosteal implants serving as a representative use case for improved micropatterned implant design. This work will pave the way for the scalable manufacturing of personalized implants with tailored surface properties, contributing to innovation in regenerative medicine and advanced biomaterials.

DiaPee is a home-and-clinic urology diagnostics platform that already captures uroflow/volume and colour–spectral urine data and syncs structured results to clinicians. With Pilot Line 2, we will add inkjet-functionalised, smartphone-read urine biosensors so doctors get biochemical context alongside flow/volume in one step, with automatic cloud upload. The project focuses on commercial integration and validation: start with one priority analyte (e.g., pH), co-create pilot batches, verify accuracy/repeatability vs reference methods, and deliver a clean app/API connection and usability evidence.
Outcome: a CE-ready add-on that upgrades DiaPee from physical-only monitoring to combined physio-chemical triage for UTI/LUTS, with a clear path to expand the analyte panel and to EU manufacturing transfer via the pilot line.

Uric acid measurement serves as a valuable diagnostic tool to distinguish between urate overproduction and impaired renal clearance. Elevated urinary levels are associated with nephrolithiasis risk and reflect increased purine metabolism, while reduced excretion may indicate renal dysfunction or pharmacologic effect. Electrochemical methods for uric acid detection offer rapid, sensitive, and cost-effective detection, and are increasingly explored as of their capability of providing high sensitivity and selectivity, requiring small sample volumes, allowing for rapid, real-time analysis without the need for extensive sample preparation.
These techniques are cost-effective, compatible with miniaturized and portable devices, and point-of-care testing platforms. Non-enzymatic electrochemical detection of uric acid, while advantageous for simplicity and stability, is constrained by several factors as lower selectivity due to interference from coexisting electroactive species or electrode fouling, which diminishes signal reproducibility over time; often requires higher overpotentials that can induce unwanted side reactions; reduced sensitivity compared with enzymatic methods, limiting detection at low concentrations; and analytical performances are highly dependent on the electrode material and surface modifications.

sInkScreen is aiming to address the technological limitations by developing a non-enzymatic electrochemical platform provided with electrodes functionalized with a receptor layer based on 2D materials hybridized with Quantum Dots, with tailored dimensional and geometrical architecture for uric acid (UA) detection, fabricated through integration of inkjet printing as final manufacturing stage within screen-printing. sInkScreen is in line with the 2nd Pilot Line of InkjetBioAM, PL2 - Inkjet printing for functionalization of biosensors, supporting the attainment of its technological goal.

The proposed project involves usability testing of the existing bioAM incontinence sensor technology and the development of a user-friendly interface. We will overcome the challenge of developing a user-friendly system for identifying incontinence and biomarker indicators in the most functional and cost-effective version based on existing individual components. We are bringing together inkjet bioAM technology (use case 2) for use with existing products (diapers), the knowledge of a focus group in the field of medicine and human care, and IoT technology. 

Designed for elderly care homes, hospitals, and home care settings, the SmartCARE system improves patient comfort, reduces caregiver workload, and lowers the risk of urinary tract infections. Building on the knowledge of the Pilot Line 2 team, the SmartCare project leverages Lab testing and a detailed protocol for future human trials to ensure safety, usability, and regulatory compliance. With scalable production and a cost-effective design, SmartCare has the potential to transform incontinence management across regional and EU markets, advancing the inkjet technology.

Nomion proposes to develop and validate an inkjet-based personalised pharmaceutical patch system as part of this project. The focus will be on formulating novel printable active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), for applications expanding beyond the use cases defined in the BioAM project. 

These APIs will be integrated into biocompatible carrier inks—such as gels, patches, or tapering tapes—enabling on-demand dosage customisation for specific patient groups. Potential applications include new business options like advanced patches for wound care, treatment of skin burns, skin cosmetics and localised drug delivery for rheumatic pain relief. 

This innovation promotes personalised medicine, minimises pharmaceutical waste, and enhances circularity through highly precise dose tailoring.

Through an existing collaboration, the Smart Biomaterials Consortium (SBMC) and Ourobionics, is spearheading the development of a next-generation 3D human skin model designed to transform pharmaceutical testing. This innovative platform will serve as a highly physiologically relevant in-vitro system for evaluating transdermal drug delivery technologies, with a particular focus on emerging modalities such as temporary tattoo-based devices.
At the heart of this initiative is Ourobionics’ patented 3D bioelectric field deposition technology, which enables the fabrication of multi-layered skin constructs that closely replicate the structural, functional, and biochemical characteristics of native human skin. These constructs will be produced within SBMC’s GMP-compliant manufacturing facilities, ensuring consistency, scalability, and regulatory alignment throughout the development process.
The engineered skin models will be rigorously tested to assess drug release information, penetration depth, and biocompatibility. The project aims to achieve predictive accuracy and relevant data on the efficacy of the novel drug application, thereby offering a reliable and reproducible alternative to traditional animal testing as well as a tool for further development and optimization.
By integrating this validated platform into GMP workflows, the project is poised to significantly reduce the reliance on early-stage animal models, streamline preclinical testing, and shorten pharmaceutical development cycles. This advancement addresses a critical bottleneck in the transdermal drug delivery pipeline, enabling faster, safer, and more cost-effective development of personalized, non-invasive therapies.
Ultimately, the project promises substantial societal and industry-wide benefits: improved patient outcomes through tailored drug delivery, reduced ethical and financial burdens associated with animal testing, and enhanced innovation capacity for pharmaceutical companies seeking to bring novel therapies to market.

Technobiz B.V. proposes 3Pharma, a project that benchmarks multiple printing technologies—inkjet, gel-based, and powder-based platforms—for their suitability in biomedical and pharmaceutical additive manufacturing. The project will focus on the encapsulation and deposition of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) in gels and powders, a key challenge for enabling on-demand and patient-specific medicines. Building on collaborations with expert partners such as Shahzad Khan (functional printing and business development), NTS (JetFab and JetProof platforms), Quantica Berlin (high-viscosity printing), and Rok 404 (PicoJET binder jetting system), Technobiz will systematically test hardware and software integration through APIs, assess reproducibility, and evaluate GMP readiness. 

The project aims to deliver: 

•  Comparative performance data of three printing platforms across pharmaceutical use cases. 
• Proof-of-concept API encapsulation strategies in gels and powders. 
• A roadmap for GMP compliance, pilot-scale validation, and industrial implementation. 
• Identification of suitable pilot facilities for further scale-up and clinical integration. 

By combining technical trials with a clear commercialization pathway, Advancing BioAM will contribute to the Inkjet-BioAM Pilot Line for personalised pharmaceuticals. It will provide evidence-based insights for pharma companies and healthcare providers, accelerate personalised drug manufacturing in Europe, and reduce waste and costs in the healthcare system.
